Introduction to Wae Rebo Village
Wae Rebo Village is one of the most famous traditional villages in Manggarai, precisely located in Satar Lenda, Satamese Barat District, Manggarai Barat Regency, on the beautiful Flores Island of East Nusa Tenggara. The residents of Wae Rebo come from the Modo tribe, preserving their traditions and culture from generation to generation. In 2012, UNESCO recognized Wae Rebo for its conservation of cultural heritage, making it a significant site of historical and cultural importance.

Unique Architecture and Enchanting Atmosphere
Wae Rebo Village comprises seven traditional houses known as Mbaru Niang. These houses have a unique cone shape, with diameters ranging from 12 to 15 meters and heights between 8 and 10 meters. The roofs, made from specific grasses and coated with palm fiber (ijuk), are designed to withstand wind and water. The village is often enveloped in a thin haze, earning it the epithet ‘town above the clouds.’ Situated at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level on Pocoroko Mountain, Wae Rebo offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the Hindia Ocean.
Cultural Significance and Traditions
Wae Rebo Village is not only known for its unique architecture but also for its rich cultural traditions. The village features a circular pattern with a central square rock altar, used for custom ceremonies. One such ceremony is the Waelu ceremony, performed to welcome guests, where the tribe leader prays for visitors’ safety and well-being. Respecting the local customs, visitors are advised to dress appropriately and seek permission before taking photos. Additionally, the cool, hilly atmosphere makes it essential to bring a sweater or jacket.
How to Visit Wae Rebo Village
To reach Wae Rebo Village, start by taking a flight from Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar to Labuan Bajo Airport in West Manggarai. From there, drive for about four hours to Ruteng City, a small town in the central Manggarai district. Enjoy the scenic views of rice-shaped cobwebs in Lembor or Cancar during the trip. The final leg of the journey involves a trek from Denge Village, the last stop before reaching Wae Rebo Village, which takes approximately four hours.
