Introduction to Mt. Mbeliling

Mt. Mbeliling, also known as Gunung Mbeliling, is the westernmost significant mountain on the island of Flores. Its proximity to Labuan Bajo, a popular tourist destination before or after visiting Komodo Island, has made the Mbeliling hike a prominent ecotourism option for visitors to West Flores. Located just a few kilometers north of the ancient Wai Sano caldera, which contains the largest crater lake in Flores, Sano Nggoang, Mbeliling offers a unique experience for nature lovers and birdwatchers.

The Hiking Experience

The recommended trailhead for the Mbeliling hike is now Dusun Cecer in Liang Ndara, which is just 40 minutes from Labuan Bajo. The village, situated at 620 meters above sea level, offers stunning coastal views and even occasional glimpses of the distant Sangeang Api volcano island. From Dusun Cecer, the paved track winds through pineapple and coffee plantations before reaching the forest edge. The trail becomes steeper and rockier as it progresses, with a narrow ridge and great views back to the village and the coast. The summit, known as Golo Beliling, stands at approximately 1,275 meters and is a perfect camping spot to enjoy breathtaking sunsets and sunrises.

Nature and Culture

Beyond the natural beauty, the hike offers a glimpse into the local culture. Friendly and informative guides from Dusun Cecer are happy to show visitors around the plantations and share insights about the area. The village also offers homestay options for those who wish to spend a night in the hills. The trail’s unique flora and fauna, including the occasional leech, add to the adventure. The summit area provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including Labuan Bajo, the Komodo Islands, and the Sano Nggoang lake.

Additional Peaks and Trails

For those seeking further exploration, the second peak on the Bakosurtanal map, slightly lower at 1,262 meters, is just a 15-minute hike from the true summit. This peak features an old Dutch-era triangulation pillar and offers excellent sunrise views to the east. A less-used trail continues down to the village of Roe, providing additional trekking options for the more adventurous.
